Engagement Style Guide | Washington DC Wedding Photography + Tips

After a client books an engagement session, the first question a couple usually asks is “what should we wear?” The most important thing to feel during your engagement session is comfortable and yourself. You want your clothing and accessories to reflect you and your personal style.

That being said, your engagement session is a special occasion and sometimes we don't always have exactly what we want in our closets to celebrate. A lot of my clients end up renting from Rent The Runway, an online shop that allows women to rent expensive, designer dresses for a fraction of the cost. The best part? We have a physical store here in Georgetown so you can actually walk in and try on select styles. When ordering, you're also able to order two different sizes, for the price of one!

Aside from loving on your partner, feeling beautiful and confident is the first step to a successful engagement session. All of my clients that have gone the Rent-the-Runway route have all agreed that it added something extra special to their session, and they absolutely loved how they looked and felt! And seriously, besides your wedding day (which is going to fly by!) when else are you going to be able to get dressed up and look and feel your best? Take advantage of this exciting season in your life!

Whether you decide to rent or wear something in your closet, here are some frequently asked questions when it comes to styling for your engagement session…

I always invite my couples to text or email me their outfit choices. For the guys, I strongly suggest choosing shirts without logos or sayings and to keep it simple. You want to stay away from anything that’s too busy, as well. Stick to smaller, rather than larger, patterns.

Nope. The myth that certain colors don’t photograph well is nonsense. I would, however, tailor your color choices to your skin tone, eye color, and hair color. Wear the color that looks best on you. I always advise my couples to coordinate colors and patterns together. For example, if one of you has chosen to wear a pattern than the other should choose a solid. Keep it simple, and jazz it up with jewelry or layers.

Please, no. This isn't a high school chorus concert. ;)

I suggest layering your outfits to create some diversity in your images. Accessories that you can take on and off help, as well. Wearing a flowy gown? Jazz it up with a leather jacket! Don't have a leather jacket, but want to wear one? I love to share my wardrobe! Just ask!

That is completely up to you! For most of my clients, getting their hair and makeup done means one less thing for them to worry about. They feel beautiful and confident and it show’s in their images.
